Hurricanes, Jimmy Buffett... and Boatyard Bar & Grill All Killer, No Filler Crab Cakes online

Jimmy-Buffett-on-stage-Paris

November 1 - today is 70 degrees, wow! We won’t see this again until next April/May.  I’m swimming outside for about the last time this year.

We held our last outdoors charity function on Sat Sept 15. It was supposed to be the Boatyard Beach Bash for and at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. BUT, the hurricane was coming up the East Coast after making land in North Carolina and many of the amazing artists fly up from Florida and Nashville.  The Governor declared a state of emergency and the AMM would surely flood so we called it off on Tuesday morning.  Darn!  Wait, on Wednesday AM the storm track shifted south.   Mayer Kirby Mayer, one of our headliners for the Beach Bash, called to say that they were on tour in the area and could still perform for a three-hour concert.  At a Wednesday morning meeting at the Museum quick decisions were made.  With all of our WONDERFFUL sponsors still in we would refund the sold-out Beach Bash tickets and sell our Hurricane Party tickets at a lower price, get a food truck, have a drink table and Boom! we were a "go". The evening was amazing!   Peter Mayer created a bidding frenzy when he offered for auction concert tickets to next year's Jimmy Buffett concert and because of the generosity of some guests in the audience, the museum cleared the same amount that we would have from the bigger event. Thank you, Mayer Kirby Mayer and AMM for their quick reaction time by their incredible staff. Thank you sponsors and our guests who had a great show on a beautiful evening. Here are some pictures from the evening taken by our friend Ken.

Right before our annual trip to Europe we attended the Congressional Medal of Honor Gala Dinner at the Naval Academy.   We couldn't pass up the chance to have a pic with Jay Leno and Emcee Norah O’Donnell. Shameless groupies!!

We were off to London to see G’s fam and catch Hamilton for the third time. We found that, because the English clip their words, you could hear every word unlike in NYC (which of course was also amazing).  We visited Chartwell, Churchill’s home. It’s been totally preserved. His artwork which was his relaxation is displayed in a gallery. He painted about 300 pieces and about 150 are still at Chartwell. The others he gave away and sell at auction at $1M each.  There I am in front of Chartwell flashing the V for Victory sign. And some amazing Scottish eggs at a nearby pub.

On the move, we're off to Paris via the tunnel where we ate and toured street art and ate and ate - visited markets to taste everything....dinner at the Eiffel Tower. We also saw Jimmy Buffett in concert for 1,300 people at Le Cigale which is very special (dates back to 1887).  Jimmy, Peter and Brendan Mayer and the band on stage.

Naval_academy_mids_at_Boatyard_Bar__Grill Summer at the Boatyard Bar & Grill

September and lots to write to you about..............

Before Fin and the Sailer girls head off to school we got them to WRNR to do a radio ad. They have done so about 8 or 9 years now.   Fin, Morgan and Lilly Sailer at the station. Of course Eastport Pirate Tom Weaver is the voice of the Boatyard and Tom with WRNR producer/DJ Rob do an amazing job.

The third of our big outdoor charity events was mid-August - the Boatyard CRAB Cup to benefit CRAB - Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating for those of all ages with disabilities including wounded warriors. This regatta was followed up later that week with the CRAB Annapolis Police Dept Youth Sailing Camp for at risk kids. What a great group!! G and me with Title Sponsor Annapolis Volvo’s Michelle Eichorn at the afterparty featuring Misspent Youth - amazing band. Thank you, Michelle!!!  And of course, Mt. Gay Rum and Red Stripe Beer among others.   Me posing with our Boatyard team, GM Kevin and servers Gabby and Michael.   Our Captain and crew on Juice, very respectable showing less than a minute behind the other Alerion that races in every regatta. Good going Dave.  Enjoy the pictures, more on our site Boatyard Bar & Grill gallery.

Dick's Blog: Eastport Annapolis highlights

Boatyard-Whales The whales!!

Hello from the Boatyard!! It’s July and we are in the thick of summer and loving it. In the “land of pleasant living” as they used to say on the Natty Boh jingle-in the 70s. Where have all the years (flowers) gone? Yikes! The Boatyard is cranking and it’s great to be full every day. We appreciate your patronage and are working hard to continue to deserve it. 77,000 crab cakes sold last year. It’s a high bar but you’re helping us beat it. And you’re shipping those crab cakes online nationwide to your Uncle Louie in Omaha and as corporate gifts to your important clients in Sacramento. Thanks!

Our second big event, Bands In the Sand at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s beautiful Merrill Center, in mid-June was an amazing success. Best ever. Sold out in a week or so. Great bands, food, drinks, weather, sponsors, guests, boats, etc. Thank you!   We raised record setting funds for CBF to do their great work to Save the Bay, and you know by now that the Bay is getting so much better!! Thank you CBF- its staff, supporters, and those with the political will to help us leave a better Bay for our kids.

Capital Gazette reviews the Boatyard Bar & Grill

Capital Gazette reviews the Boatyard Bar & Grill -

Dining Out:  Just another local at the Boatyard Bar & Grill

The Boatyard Bar and Grill is another one of those places that everyone seems to know about. From the outside it looks like the classic dockside bar that has been there since before the town was built around it. Signs depict sailing locations around the world, and the outside deck is full of happy customers.

Boatyard Bar & Grill featured in What's Up Dining: The Taste

Recently What's Up Magazine's Rita Calvert came by the Boatyard for a visit and in the process, wrangled the recipe for Chef George's version of the classic Antoine's Stuffed Oysters Rockefeller.

If you sit down and have a friendly chat with Dick Franyo, owner of the Boatyard, you will learn a lot.  If you sit down with executive chef, George Bentz (ed. correct spelling Betz) you will laugh a lot.  Luckily, I got to experience learning and laughter during two different conversations with first, Dick and then chef George.

Boatyard Bar & Grill Straws are Compostable

Boatyard-Compostable-Straw_20180719-200332_1

In keeping with the Boatyard's commitment to a healthier environment, our straws are 100% plant based and completely compostable......since 2014!

Veteran Compost began composting our food waste in 2013 (now that is an incredible process!).   Not long after, Justen let us know that the beautiful Boatyard red straws were getting into the scraps and messing with the machinery.  Turning tail on our environmental pledge was not an option so we sourced a completely compostable green one.  Companies are increasingly leaning toward more eco-friendly products and fortunately the price has come way down, allowing smaller venues to participate too.  It's kind of cool that every step in the right direction creates a ripple of positive change!

Not wanting a straw with your beverage?  Please let our servers know!  We are happy to comply.

What else do we do?

Voted Best Raw Bar by What's Up Best of Annapolis 2018, we sell a whole lot oysters here at the Boatyard.

Boatyard Rockfish Tournament (& Dick about town!)

Dick-Franyo-casting-with-Buddy-Pinder-fishing-the-Marles

One down and three to go--- the Boatyard outdoor charity events that is. Our Opening Day Spring Fishing Tournament (Catch and Release) was held on Sat April 21. It benefits the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Coastal Conservation Association MD and the Annapolis Police Department Youth Fishing Camp. It was a tough day for the large number of boats (131!) fishing wise (why? water too cold? fish still up the Bay and rivers spawning? Every fisherperson has a strongly felt opinion!). So, cool this year that second place was won by a woman (Sara Brown) and third place was won by a youth (Will Muscatello). First place was Rich Vigue at 42.25 inches caught jigging at the Power Plant. The awards party was huge and fun and the tough day fishing was quickly forgotten. Over 1,000 here at the Boatyard eating Chefs George’s great food, music by the Jess McQuay Band and a more than a few adult beverages. Thanks to Anglers Sports Center (Charlie and Jane Ebersberger), our presenting sponsor for all 17 years of the tournament and all of the other sponsors, captains and crews, our volunteers from CBF and my Boatyard team that does a remarkable job. 17 years-- Yikes!!!  Click here for tournament results and photos, and click here for FishTalk party coverage.

The Boatyard Bar & Grill’s Dick Franyo Blog reveals his winter perspective – fun from mostly warm places!

The Boatyard Bar & Grill’s Dick Franyo Blog reveals his winter perspective – fun from mostly warm places!

Last Blog was end of December. Now it’s almost spring. Paula asking “Dick where’s the Blog already?” OK, just a few more pics of winter on the Bay. Can’t help myself. How many shades of grey? (Editor's Note:  50?).  And one with the Pilot Launch taking Bay pilots to and from the ships anchored in the middle of the Bay waiting to go into the Port of Baltimore. It’s a great career btw! Speaking of ships anchored waiting to go to the Port of Baltimore with this weeks high winds there were 21 ships anchored out there. A record for me.
